THE GRAND TOUR CAPE TO CAPE 27 APRIL TO  3 MAY 2009

"RETURNING TO IRELAND"

The last five "Grand Tours" have been unimaginably successful in raising over £ 273,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Whilst raising such a magnificent sum classic car teams have enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow participants throughout the week long drive from one cape to the other. The Tours have matured since the first relatively straightforward event and whilst not a timed rally some now class the 'Cape to Cape' as "The toughest classic car tour in Europe".

For 2009 we intend to commence from Cape Clear, then traverse the Irish passes and the Wicklow Mountains prior to sailing from Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead. The route will then incorporate the spectacular mountain range of Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons in South Wales and the scenic hills of Exmoor prior to finishing at the beautiful cliff top that is Cape Cornwall.

Be warned - a scenic route but tough.  This Tour will include regularities (for the ralliers), hill climbs (for the trialists) and possibly a speed test (for the racers).  All tastes catered for!

PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME AND ROUTE OUTLINE:

(Updated on 20 Oct 08)

SUNDAY 26 APRIL - CELTIC ROSS HOTEL, ROSSCARBERY BAY, IRELAND

Pre-tour formalities and briefing followed by complimentary pre-event canapιs and wine at the superior 3 star Celtic Ross Hotel, Rosscarbery Bay, West Cork This hotel has hosted our Gala Dinner and Award Presentations on two occasions when finishing at Cape Clear and the management have promised to provide us with their "Simply Special" approach to ensure a great send off.

MONDAY 27 APRIL – CAPE CLEAR – KILLARNEY

The Tour will commence with an early morning ferry trip to encircle Cape Clear where your Road Books will be stamped prior to returning to Baltimore to undertake the day's drive to the "rally town" of Killarney. En route we will skirt Bantry Bay - known for its delicious mussels - crawl over the top of a number of the famous passes situated in the Beara and Kerry peninsulas prior to an evening of relaxation in the 4 star Randles Dromhall Hotel – voted the best hotel on our 2007 Tour.

TUESDAY 28 APRIL – KILLARNEY – ADARE (nr LIMERICK)

Perhaps a further brief visit to the Ring of Kerry before visiting the renowned Dingle Peninsula , where Ryan’s Daughter was filmed, and maybe another short ferry trip taking us as far as the unique granite "moonscape" and maze of narrow roads of The Burren . Our overnight halt will be Adare, close to Limerick and the estuary of the river Shannon. Will there be any five-line humorous verses relayed over Dinner?

*WEDNESDAY 29 APRIL – ADARE – BRAY

Now covering some new territory for Cape to Capers the route heads north via the Slieve Aught Mountains and Lough Derg broadly following the length of the Shannon to the banks of Lough Ree and the Wicklow Mountains for the overnight stay in Bray, ready for the ferry crossing on Thursday.  Make the most of your last day in Ireland with a few pints of the Black Velvet or a flute of Guinness and Champagne for the ladies!

*THURSDAY 30 APRIL – VIA HOLYHEAD FERRY TO LAKE VYRNWY

After an early ferry ride, the route will pass through the Snowdonia National Park and on to Lake Vyrnwy , no doubt retracing those wonderful road rallying roads of yesteryear.  (Motoring News Championships, anybody?)

*FRIDAY 1 MAY – LAKE VYRNWY TO CARDIFF

And then to the military roads of Epynt and the Brecons and yet more of those wonderful classic rallying roads for which Wales is renowned - and I do not mean the WRC 'Rally of Wales' - before a night stop in Cardiff prior to the crossing into  England for the penultimate day of this rigorous Tour.

SATURDAY 2 MAY – CARDIFF TO BIDEFORD, NORTH DEVON

Probably the only day on which you might face some motorway driving to ensure that all enjoy the delights of Exmoor including Dunkery Beacon and the Doone Valley. This is now trialling territory where one might expect to face some steep but short hill climbs whilst avoiding the many sheep which abound on the moor!

SUNDAY 3 MAY – BIDEFORD TO CAPE CORNWALL

The final day and a journey into yet another county – Cornwall! The narrow roads and lanes of the county have always been a test for the navigators who will no doubt sigh with relief at the sight of the final Cape and the Brisons, known locally as "General de Gaulle taking his bath". It will then be a short journey to the port of Falmouth for a Gala Dinner and Awards Presentation.  The Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall has graciously agreed to present the awards...so start collecting!
