CHARITY PAGE

Since 2000, Brod and Carolyn have undertaken a number of long distance classic car tours with the express aim of raising funds for charities with a personal aspect.  The first charity chosen was the 'British Epilepsy Association' as Brod's niece had just been diagnosed as epileptic and an Oxford University friend of Brod's had just drowned as a result of a sudden seizure whilst punting on the Cherwell.  They raised £1500 by taking part in the 1500 mile 12th Classic Marathon from Ypres to San Remo in their 1969 875cc Hillman Super Imp.

Some years later, after retirement (for the second time) from the RAF, Brod and Carolyn moved to Lincolnshire, sold the Imp and bought another, more comfortable, classic - a 1966 Porsche 912 SWB Coupé.  The intention was to continue with HRCR rallies - but as these are predominantly based further south, and the 912 needed some work, this aim has not been achieved.  But, we had a classic that needed to be used and in 2006,  a relative of Carolyn's was diagnosed with terminal cancer roughly about the same time as the HRCR magazine 'Old Stager' had an advertisement for a classic tour starting from Cape Wrath (near the RAF's bombing range in NW Scotland) to Cape Clear, the southernmost cape in Eire.  As the aim was to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, whose nurses had so well looked after Carolyn's relative, we agreed to do our bit and enter this 1500 mile tour.  A couple of months later, after a camping tour in France and Belgium, Brod was also diagnosed with cancer, although not terminal.

So we started to raise funds through a 'Justgiving' website and various friends and contacts, as well as family members.  We had to start from scratch, but managed to raise £1700, exceeding our £1500 target.  We had a great time on the Tour and met very many terrific classic car enthusiasts, many of whom had been touched by cancer.  And we had discovered that this Tour was an annual event - the decision was made to enter the 2008 event as well.

Owing to Brod's cancer and an inability to find travel insurance, we had to cancel a visit to New York to stay with Brod's daughter, we were better able to enter the 2008 Tour and this time spend more time focusing on fund raising - without relying on those who had already supported our 2007 efforts.  Two days spent standing in the foyer of Cleethorpes 'Tesco' supermarket raised very nearly £2000 towards our total of £4500 (against a target of £2500).  The 2008 Tour took all entrants across the channel for the first time - starting from Cape Cornwall and ending at Cap Ferret in France.  Unfortunately our 912 threw a wobbly on the M1 with an unserviceable fuel pump, so after a tow home, we had to change cars and join the Tour in Plymouth in our modern KIA!

The in 2009 we decided to have a rest and spend a couple of days marshalling in Devon and Cornwall just to maintain many wonderful friendships.  The Tour itself started from Cape Clear to end at Cape Cornwall - and we donated £500 to Macmillan Cancer Support as we had done no fund raising.

And we have already paid the entry fee for this year's Tour and have spent time and money on improving the 912 with the expectation that we can actually complete a Tour from its start at Cape Cornwall to its finish in Cabo Finisterre in NW Spain.  Again we shall be using Justgiving to raise funds.  (www.justgiving.com/tumbili)
