What is the 'Cape to Cape Tour'? In 2002 well known and experienced rally navigator and founder of the 'Lands End - John o' Groats Association' under whose banner the Cape to Cape Tour still runs, Dennis Greenslade, supported by his late wife Tricia, came up with the idea of a non-competitive tour that would take place between the only named capes in the British Isles: Cape Cornwall and Cape Wrath. As an added incentive, the fund raising for Macmillan Cancer Support became its principal aim. From that small start, the event has grown 'just like Topsy' and Macmillan Cancer has benefited from every tour. In 2007, 38 crews set off from Cape Wrath in their classic cars heading for Cape Clear (the only Cape in Ireland) and the funds they raised, added to those already raised during these annual events, have brought the total sum donated to Macmillan to very nearly £250,000. In 2008, the route departed these shores for the first time, thus adding a sea-crossing, whilst maintaining the original concept of a route between two Capes. One important factor that may often be missed is that all entrants pay their own entry fees and not a single penny raised goes towards personal expenses. That is called commitment. The Tour is not a competitive event, its sole purpose is to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, whilst at the same time enjoying driving classic cars along well planned routes in the company of great, like minded 'Tourists'. However...there is an element of 'social competitiveness'. There will be incidents along the route where penalty fines may be handed out for various misdemeanours and the trick is to ensure you do not get caught. However, any fines do get added to the final sum raised, so it's all in a good cause, anyway. So, if you have a car that fits the bill (built before 31 December 1986), come and join us. If you have an interesting car, though built after 1 January 1987, get in touch with Dennis and convince him to let you join us. There are some of these 'modern / future classics' already on the entry list, so do not be shy! Although the regulations state that no advertising is permitted, with the consent of the organizers, advertising that assists in the fund raising effort will be allowed. And do not ever forget...the whole aim is to raise as much money for Macmillan Cancer Support as we can. What about 2009? Crews to a maximum entry of 40, will start from Cape Clear and stay in Ireland for a couple of days before taking an early morning ferry from Dublin to Holyhead. The route through Wales will concentrate on Snowdonia and the wonderful military ranges at Epynt before heading for North Devon and Cornwall to finish at Cape Cornwall followed by the Gala Dinner in Falmouth.
